Kuraray Co Ltd has commenced work on a mass-production facility at its plant in Okayama, Japan, using the Clarino Advanced Technology System, an environmentally friendly man-made leather production process developed for the first time in the industry.
The system will make use of a novel sea-island fibre and production capacity is slated to be 2.5 million [m.sup.2] a year in Stage 1.
In January 2007, after launching a pilot machine, Kuraray started marketing activities for environmentally friendly man-made leather with its product being used in soccer, running and golf sports shoes. The leather products are also now used in casual shoes and in ball and sports glove lines. With the Clarino Advanced Technology System at its core, Kuraray plans to accelerate the environmentally-friendly man-made leather business.

The production process can be shortened up to approximately one-fifth, while [CO.sub.2] emissions can be reduced by approximately 35%, and drainage water can be cut by 70%, compared with Kuraray's conventional processes.
